As I've written numerous times 
, we have already moved to our new home.Iit is located on a new subdivision, which means that we don't have that many neighbors yet. On our side of the block, we are the only tenants while on our opposite block , there are just 3. The houses are not even next to each other. They had at least 1 unit unoccupied between them. When we were moving our things, a neighbor went to visit her unit. Her unit was exactly on the right side of our house. I was happy with the thought that anytime soon, we will finally have a real close neighbor.
Being a friendly neighbor, I started talking with her. I found out that she will be living with her 3 kids in their house and that her husband is an OFW. She later on opened the discussion about the fence that she intends to put in between us. I was open with the idea of sharing the expenses since it would benefit us both. Few days passed and she told G that she had already found a contractor that can work on the fence. So G told her that we will still share as long as it is fair on our side. Since we are on their left side of the fence, this means that we will only share on this part of the fence. Our computation is something like: materials and labor divided by 2. Then she came up with the costing. Her estimate for the materials is P18,000 + labor P8,000. This totals to P26,000 for their whole fence BUT she is asking for P10,000 contribution for our part... tsk tsk tsk... if she wanted fair sharing, she would have computed something like P26,000/6 = P4,333 each. 6 because she shares the other side with another neighbor and 2 parts which is the front area for herself. Our side of the fence is merely 1/6th of the entire fence. To fix things, G suggested that she makes her own fence and we make our own. It is like having 2 fences in between us. She covers her part while we do the same.
From then on, she never talks to us anymore. She wasn't like before when she'd chat with me whenever she's around to check on her unit. Now, it seems that we don't exist at all.
Howell, I guess this is how it really works. There are neighbors who tend to feel 'better' or 'higher' simply because they are older and they tend to know more. It just saddens me because we are next-door neighbors and in case something happens, we should be the nearest persons that we can call on during emergencies.
